What are the different types of sedation?
There are three different types of sedation: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation. Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation. Its effects work quickly and wear off when the gas is no longer administered through a soft nasal mask. Oral sedation involves taking prescription medication prior to one’s appointment. IV sedation is used for more lengthy or invasive procedures where anesthesia is necessary.
Which procedures require sedation dentistry?
Sometimes, patients may be given oral sedation or nitrous oxide for minimally invasive procedures – especially if they suffer with clinical or dental phobias. Since nitrous oxide and prescription medication can improve overall comfort and mood, they are beneficial for services like oral pathology or dental implant placement. Procedures that are more surgical in nature such as corrective jaw surgery, for example, might require IV sedation. Patients who have endured significant facial trauma may receive IV sedation as well. IV sedation is ideal for long, complex procedures.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
When administering any type of sedation, we follow very strict protocols to ensure that our guests are safe and relaxed. Determining whether sedation is necessary for a patient is a very careful process. Before administering any medication, we will review a patient’s medical and drug history closely. Dosages and types of medications used are determined on a case-by-case basis.
