What is an oral sedative?
An oral sedative is a mild tranquilizer that is taken orally in pill form. The most common sedatives administered in this way are from a family of prescription drugs called benzodiazepines. This family of medication is formulated to diminish and eliminate anxiety, and in higher doses, it can produce feelings of tranquility.
When is an oral sedative taken?
When our oral surgeon prescribes an oral sedative, you will be given instructions that explain when the best time to take your medication is. For example, you may be prescribed medication and be instructed to take one pill the night before your appointment so that you receive a restful night’s sleep and another an hour before your appointment so that you come to our practice feeling at ease and comfortable. When prescribed oral sedation, remember to have a friend or family member transport you to and from your appointment because this type of medication can impair your ability to drive.
Are these types of medications safe?
When used in the manner prescribed, these medications can be of great benefit. When sedation is needed, our oral surgeon considers many factors to determine the proper dose and the timing of dosages is just right for your needs.
