Dental Surgery: 4 Ways to Prepare

Dental Surgery: 4 Ways to Prepare

If you are going to have dental surgery, there are a few things that you can do to be prepared. Making sure you’ve covered all the bases will help the day of your surgery go that much smoother.

Good preparation will also reduce your level of stress. Keep reading to find out 4 ways that you can prepare for dental surgery.

1. Get a Ride

You might need to pre-arrange a ride for yourself when you come out of surgery. Your dentist may require that you have a driver because of the lingering effects of anesthesia. It’s also helpful since you might feel fatigued.

If you’re feeling overly fatigued or experiencing the effects of anesthesia, it can be unsafe for you and other drivers, as well. Try to get a friend or family member to pick you up to take you home after surgery, and that way, you can just relax and enjoy the ride.

2. Fast Beforehand

It is always a good idea to fast before the surgery, particularly if you’re having general anesthesia that will render you unconscious. Your oral surgeon will most likely require fasting in that case to prevent any problems.

This means that you will need to stop eating and drinking at midnight the night before your surgery. You can take a sip of water if you need to, but all food and drinks should be avoided so that you won’t experience any complications.

3. Wear Loose Clothing

Wearing loose-fitting clothing can help to make the process before your dental surgery much easier. First, you want to be as comfortable as possible, but it also makes it easier to receive the anesthesia and for the nurses to hook you up to an IV, if necessary.

4. Don’t Rush

It is a good idea to arrive at your surgery location at least 20 minutes early. This gives you plenty of time to check in and get ready for the surgery.

Dental surgery is not a situation in which you want to feel rushed, so you want to make sure you are early instead of right on time. Being in a rush will only make the process feel more stressful for you.

If you are going to have dental surgery done, these 4 steps are a great way to prepare. They can help to make the process simpler and less stressful for you.
