Nitrous Oxide
Also called “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is administered through a soft nasal mask. This gas is safe for almost all people. Its effects work quickly, too. Nitrous oxide produces a mild sedative effect and has analgesic properties as well. This type of sedation does not require a person to arrange for transportation to and from our practice because its effects wear off very fast. Nitrous oxide is ideal for short procedures or for tooth extractions (including wisdom teeth) that are not complex.
Oral Sedation
Delivered through prescription tablets, oral sedation is stronger than nitrous oxide. This type of sedation utilizes medication from the benzodiazepine class of drugs. This family of medication is formulated specifically for relaxing the central nervous system. Benzodiazepines such as Valium or Klonopin can make a patient feel groggy. Some people might even sleep through their procedures. Most importantly, however, oral sedation promotes a relaxing and comfortable procedure.
IV Sedation
For longer or more invasive procedures such as complex wisdom teeth removal, IV sedation might be ideal. Medication is administered through an IV and its dosage can be adjusted throughout one’s treatment. IV sedation can be very powerful but it is safe when provided in a controlled environment. Patients’ vitals are constantly monitored and staff has training to respond to emergencies, if they arise.
